MONEY AND HAPPINESS
Money has been the central object of power
throughout the centuries dating all the way back to Aztec and the Indus
civilizations. During Aztec times, chocolate or cocoa beans were used as
currency. The wealthy class in showing off their wealth would melt the currency
down and drink it, in other words hot chocolate, as a way of showing off their
wealth. A cup of hot chocolate would make anyone happy but given our current
era, does money make us happy? Well for one thing, it is certainly much better
to cry inside of a Ferrari than without one.
Nothing in our world is obtained for free. One
seeking a better life must put in the hard work that comes with the lifestyle.
These are the fundamentals behind a capitalist system by rewarding hard work
and allowing the system to thrive with prosperity. I think sometimes we tend to
forget what liberty and freedom, ideas that many people in the past had died
for, is and what role is has in today’s life and what would the world be
without it. You have the freedom to do whatever you want with your hard earned
money and that includes pursuing your own happiness.
Everyone is unique thus each has their own version
or idea of what is happiness is. Hanging out with friends, getting married,
sightseeing, racing sports cars running away to an exotic island and eating
delicious food, it’s not surprising that all of these require money. Things
like transportation, groceries and expenses. The world revolves around
achieving happiness and in this world happiness is bought through money.
Maybe in a perfect heavenly utopia money isn’t
required for you to be happy and everything you ever wanted is handed to you on
a silver platter. But the world we live in isn’t exactly an endless array of
sunshine. Many parents want their kids to go to college to study and to live a
successful live further after. The reality though is that college isn’t cheap
and the money is obtained through hard labor and work. It is worth it in the
end however, you get to live your life successfully and your parents get to see
you off. Happiness achieved through money. In fact, the main reason we go to
college is to get more money and a higher expected salary than what a high
school student would receive.
It is time we stopped ignoring the fact that money is
what shapes the world. And honestly, pursuing your own happiness isn’t even
close to being a bad thing as long as you don’t cheat other people off of their
money and hard work. Happiness is your own, you are entitled to it. The answer
is yes, money buys happiness.
